The research project "Flip-flopping again? Political elite's position shifts, media coverage, and the public" by Prof. Dr. Alexandra Feddersen has been approved by the Swiss National Science Foundation and will start in 2024. This research project explores the dilemma faced by political elites when they consider changing their stance on policy issues. Updating one's position on pressing policy issues might be seen as necessary in some circumstances, but it may also lead to credibility loss as voters might perceive their elites as inconsistent. This project examines the connection between politicians and voters, focusing on credibility and trustworthiness, with a special emphasis on the media's role in holding elites accountable and the public informed. It aims to understand (A) how political elites change their positions on policy issues, (B) how the media reports these changes, and (C) how the public perceives these shifts. The findings will contribute to the field of political communication, as well as to the larger democratic debate on the possible causes of the highly worrisome decline of citizens’ trust in their political elites, and the media’s role in democratic societies.
La Dr Florence Van Hove est partenaire du projet FNS « MICAH » (Media Interactions, Cognition and Adolescent Health) initié par l’Université de Genève et en collaboration avec la ZHAW de Zürich, qui a pour objectif de comprendre comment l’utilisation des médias numériques affecte le développement cognitif des adolescents, et plus largement quels sont les impacts sur leur santé et leur bien-être. Pendant deux ans, environ 800 élèves de 12 à 18 ans seront interrogés dans les écoles de toute la Suisse, via des questionnaires en ligne et des mini-jeux ludiques sur tablette. Il est attendu que les résultats contribuent à la compréhension des relations entre les fonctions exécutives (inhibition, flexibilité, mémoire de travail) et les usages et effets des médias numériques dans la période particulière de l’adolescence, qui est caractérisée par une grande plasticité du cerveau.
