The research project “Generative Visual AI in Swiss Journalism: Exploring Production and Audience Perspectives Through a Mixed-Methods Design” by Prof. Dr. Sina Blassnig has been approved by the Swiss National Science Foundation.
This research project explores how media professionals in German, French- and Italian-speaking Switzerland use, perceive and evaluate generative visual AI technologies in their media production. These insights will be combined with the audience perspective by investigating how media audiences imagine the use of generative AI technologies in Swiss journalism, and how they perceive and evaluate these technologies and their usage in a journalism context.
The mixed-methods design combines qualitative, quantitative and visual methods, consisting of visual diaries, expert interviews and an online survey with Swiss journalists as well as focus groups and an online survey with Swiss media audiences in all three major language regions.
The four-year project will create two PhD positions and Dr. Seraina Tarnutzer (post-doc at the DCM and co-author of the proposal) will also be involved in the project as a Co-PI.
