As of September 1, 2025, Andreas Fischer has joined the SES Faculty as Professor of Computer Science (Software Engineering) in the Department of Informatics.

He obtained his PhD at the University of Bern, conducted postdoctoral research at Concordia University and Polytechnique Montréal, and held, prior to his appointment, a combined position in Fribourg as Lecturer at the University of Fribourg and as Professor at the School of Engineering and Architecture of Fribourg.

Andreas Fischer’s research group, AI for the Benefit of Human Experts (AIBEX), develops novel methods in artificial intelligence and pattern recognition to support human experts in their work, including historians, linguists, medical doctors, and specialists in building automation and circular economy, to name just a few. Research topics include deep learning, large vision and language models, graph-based pattern recognition, document and handwriting analysis, as well as AI-oriented software engineering.

He serves on the Governing Board of the International Association of Pattern Recognition (IAPR), representing Switzerland, and chairs the Technical Committee on Reading Systems (IAPR TC11), where he contributes to the organization of international conferences and workshops.

Andreas Fischer teaches Software Engineering and Business Informatics at the Bachelor level and offers lectures on Advanced Software Engineering and Pattern Recognition at the Master level. He looks forward to interacting with the students in his courses and to supervising scientific research at all levels.
