He initially trained as a mechanic and later earned a bachelor’s degree in automotive engineering. Before joining the University of Fribourg, he was Professor of Sustainable Supply Chain Management at Bern University of Applied Sciences. Earlier in his career, he spent eight years at the University of North Florida in the United States as Associate Professor of Operations Management, and two years in France as a postdoctoral researcher at INSEAD. Before entering academia, he co-founded the Digger Foundation, a Swiss humanitarian organization, where he served as Deputy Director and worked in several countries, including South Sudan, Chad and Angola.

At the University of Fribourg, Nathan Kunz established the Supply Chain Management group. Supply chain management is about making sure that products and materials get where they are needed, from sourcing and production to transport and delivery. It affects many aspects of daily life, from what is available in stores to how quickly products arrive and how much they cost.
The group’s work focuses on how supply chains can respond to humanitarian, social and environmental challenges. This includes improving the way aid reaches people in times of crisis, helping communities be more resilient, and supporting organizations working in complex settings. One current project looks at how United Nations agencies can work more closely together to reach more people in need at a time of growing pressure on humanitarian systems. The group also studies how supply chains can contribute to more socially and environmentally responsible practices over the long term, for example by helping to reduce labor exploitation and child labor in global agricultural sectors such as cocoa and coffee. The aim is to produce research with practical impact that is academically sound and relevant.

Nathan is also involved in professional networks in Switzerland and abroad. He contributes to collaborative efforts that promote more sustainable practices across different sectors. For example, he is on the board of Sustainable Textiles Switzerland and is a member of the Swiss Sustainable Cocoa Platform and the Swiss Sustainable Coffee Platform. He also contributes to the Humanitarian Leadership Group on Supply Chain, an initiative led by the European Union that brings together partners to identify practical solutions and share good practices. In addition, he serves as an expert for Innosuisse, the Swiss innovation agency.

At the Faculty, Nathan teaches mathematics and operations management at Bachelor’s level, as well as courses in supply chain management at Master’s level. In addition to his teaching and research, he looks forward to working with companies and organizations in the canton of Fribourg and to strengthening ties between the University and the wider community. He welcomes exchanges with anyone interested in collaboration.

Contact: nathan.kunz@unifr.ch
Website: https://www.unifr.ch/inf/scm/en/

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

Nathan Kunz joined the Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences in February 2026 as Professor of Supply Chain Management in the Department of Informatics. He holds a PhD in Operations Management and a Master of Science in International Business Development from the University of Neuchâtel.
