As of January 1, 2026, Alexandra Bertschi-Michel has joined the SES Faculty as Professor of Strategic Management II with focus on SMEs and family-owned businesses in the Department of Management.
She obtained her PhD at the University of St. Gallen in 2016 and then conducted postdoctoral research at University of Bern where she obtained her Venia Docendi “Habilitation” in 2023. Her research interests focus on succession planning, financing decisions, governance and emotional aspects in privately-owned SMEs and family businesses. Her papers have been published in international Journals such as “Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice”, “Long Range Planning”, “The Journal of Technology Transfer”, and “Family Business Review”.
Besides her academic career, Alexandra Bertschi-Michel has been active in practice in advising SMEs and family businesses in financing and succession-related matters for more than 15 years.
At the University of Fribourg Alexandra Bertschi-Michel teaches “Einführung in die BWL” at the Bachelor level and offers lectures and Seminars on “Strategic Management of privately-owned firms” at the Master level. She looks forward to interacting with the students in her courses and to supervising scientific research at all levels.
